"I am grateful for this opportunity that has enriched my language studies and contributed to my career as an opera singer. Thank you for your generosity, for believing in me and for personally selecting me. I am proud to be a part of the DAAD-Foundation family."
The young opera singer Eliran Kadussi spent six weeks learning German at the DID Institute in Berlin as part of the Dr. Gustav Winkler scholarship.
Here he reports on his impressions:
I am honored to be one of the recipients of the Dr. Gustav Winkler Scholarship of the DAAD-Stiftung, which allowed me to study German for 6 weeks at the did Deutsch-Institut in Berlin.
At the beginning of the course I was placed in a B1 class. The first two weeks were quite difficult since the experience of learning a language on a daily basis and being far from home was quite overwhelming. I noticed that my grammar level was good, but my vocabulary was lacking.
After one month, speaking was much easier and I continued to the B2 class.
I had two teachers who were creative, kind and demanding. They knew my background as a countertenor singer and were aware of the needs of a young opera singer such as having an accurate diction. The students in the institute came from all over the world and it was interesting to see that so many of us have different issues with the language. The staff of the did-Institut was very kind and available at all times.
I have made many friends from Germany and from all over the world. I went to see operas in the Deutsche Oper Berlin, Komische Oper and a German opera production on Clara Schumann’s Life at the Neuköllner Oper Berlin (without any subtitles).
Visiting the opera
This experience of living and studying in Berlin was beyond my dreams and has clarified the great importance and benefits of this program.
I have just begun my third year as a student at Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London and can already report about the tremendous contribution of this summer course to my studies. I am able to have a fluent conversation with my colleagues from Germany and to perform German songs with more confidence. During this year I am participating in a German diction class as well. In addition, reading material in German for my studies is easier to me.
I am grateful for this opportunity that has enriched my language studies and contributed to my career as an opera singer. Thank you for your generosity, for believing in me and for personally selecting me. I am proud to be a part of the DAAD-foundation family.
