Stroll in Berlin

"I see this period as a unique and wonderful life experience. I hope to keep improving my German skills and to spend more time in Germany in the future."

Shira Miriam Cohen benefited from Dr. Gustav Winkler scholarship and spent six months in Berlin.

In the following she reports on her experiences:

I am truly grateful for the opportunity that was given to me by Dr. Winkler: a full scholarship for two months of language study in Germany. The scholarship allowed me to improve my German, experience a European lifestyle, and explore my future.  I am now thinking about studying in Europe again next year.

During the two months that I lived in Berlin, I attended a daily course at DID Institute. I could feel the difference after only two weeks of living in a German family home, speaking almost only German. My speaking became more fluent and I gained confidence, even when I was not sure or made mistakes. The study group was an important part of my studies. My classmates were motivated young people from all around the world, and I had a chance to learn not only about German culture but also about life in Turkey, Brazil, Italy, Switzerland, etc. Some of my classmates became my friends, and these friendships truly inspired me and expanded my expressive capabilities.

After four weeks, when we started B2 Niveau, the group progressed quickly as we spoke about crucial matters, expressed opinions, and read texts that until then seemed impossible.  For me personally, as a Jewish Israeli, I often found myself in the position of “ambassador” for my country, explaining the special issues, talking about the diversity of the population, immigration, and conflicts.

I also loved staying with a very kind lady in a large apartment in Kreuzberg, near Hermannplatz. She opened her house to me and helped me with my German. As a Berlinerin and an artist, she was able to recommend the best things to do in Berlin, including some excellent concerts, which she encouraged me to attend.

I was awed by the cultural opportunities in Berlin. I had a “ClassiCard” that allowed me to attend the best operas and concerts in Berlin for only 8-10 Euros! During my studies, I went to more than 10 concerts. It was a true joy, broadening my views and understanding. The opportunity I had to combine learning German with attending so many concerts will most certainly help me greatly in my pursuit of an opera singing career. I also believe that learning languages will help me become a better person, more open to new people, cultures, and ideas.

Finally, I see this period as a unique and wonderful life experience. I hope to keep improving my German skills and to spend more time in Germany in the future. I want to thank the DAAD and Dr. Gustav Winkler for giving me this amazing opportunity.
