It is an incredible value for me to have been awarded the “Dr. Dietrich and Dr. Elke Möller Scholarship” by the DAAD-Stiftung which allowed me to conduct the research “Startup role in the post-war rebuilding of Ukrainian economy” at the Max Planck Institute for Innovation and Competition in Munich and gain valuable academic and intercultural experiences away from home.
Prof. Dr. Iuliia Gernego spent a month in Munich at the Max Planck Institute for Innovation and Competiton supported by the Dr. Dietrich and Dr. Elke Möller Scholarship.
Below, she recounts her experiences:
Working at the Max Planck Institute (MPI) was an exceptional research experience. The institute provided an intellectually stimulating environment to boost the research. Max Planck Institute for Innovation and Competition is located in the central part of the city from where it is easy to achieve the main tourist attractions in its old part, including its world-class museums, beautiful old cathedrals, large opera house, food markets, etc. The MPI infrastructure is designed to support cutting-edge research in economic and legal disciplines. My favorite place in MPI is a well-equipped library, where it is possible to get knowledge from a wide range of international sources (all useful materials are in one place). Comfortable collaborative spaces foster interaction and knowledge exchange among researchers.
The interdisciplinary approach of the research teams and well-equipped library allowed me to gain a broader perspective on innovation and foreign experience of startup development, which was immensely valuable for my research on the role of startups in the Ukrainian economy’s post-war rebuilding. The work culture encouraged collaboration and the exchange of ideas, which greatly benefited my research.
On my topic, I mainly worked individually, but I could broaden my scientific horizons, by communicating with other researchers. It was beneficiary to collaborate with my supervisor, who provided the possibility to make a presentation of my research in MPI. Fruitful discussions with MPI professors and scholars, who worked on a wide range of economic, financial, and legal topics, boosted my understanding of these scientific issues. In particular, German professors gave me valuable advice on possible sources to get acquainted with. I got advice from Ukrainian researchers, whom I met in Munich, on time management during my research stay. Communication with young scientists (for example, postdoc researchers from Brazil) inspired me to continue further development of my research.

In particular, during the research stay, I got the possibility to conduct in-depth literature research and discussions on the following issues: startup industry functions and their application in real-world situations; standards of startup ecosystem development; success stories of successful startups development; criteria of startups’ evaluation; innovative hubs as a component of startup infrastructure development; state policies and strategies to foster a supportive ecosystem for startups. In the diverse and extensive literature collection at MPI, I discovered a wealth of knowledge from all corners of the world, consolidating valuable sources in one accessible place. I also got access to some online sources, obtaining online copies for further exploration.
These findings have not only enriched my understanding of the subject but also provided valuable insights for its further development. My next step is to predict the possible scenarios and results of the development of the startup industry in the conditions of the post-war recovery of the economy of Ukraine based on a retrospective analysis of the development of startups, and success stories of leading foreign startups. I plan to publish the results of my research in academic journals such as Finansy Ukrainy (Finance of Ukraine) and present them at relevant conferences.
I am planning further development of my research, making it also suitable for some international publishing like Elsevier or Emerald in the future. I also intend to pursue innovative courses for bachelor's and master's degree students, specializing in venture financing and startup development. Development of research in such a direction may create a background for creating a tutorial or study guide useful also for Ukrainian start-uppers.
The outcomes of my research might be useful from the perspective of foreign practice on startup development and appropriate trends for Ukrainian businesses, social organizations, and academic project offices.
The Max Planck Institute (MPI) in the fall
My time at the Max Planck Institute allowed me to establish valuable academic and personal contacts. These contacts will serve as a valuable network for future collaborations and academic discussions.
My research stay at the Max Planck Institute for Innovation and Competition has been a transformative experience, both academically and personally. My time in Germany provided an opportunity to test both German and English language. Interacting with people and navigating daily life situations allowed me to enhance my language proficiency. It was a rewarding experience that significantly contributed to my language skills.
I got a chance to observe the Bavarians’ lifestyle and habits. In particular, the care Germans extend to animals left a very positive impression on me. A good example is the presence of water dishes for dogs in the center of Munich. It reflects not only a love for pets but also a thoughtful commitment to their well-being.
In the English Garden in Munich
Visiting Bavarian landmarks, such as the Marienplatz and Nymphenburg castle, provided a deep insight into the regional culture and history. I was charmed with the rich history and art collection, stunning landmarks, and well-maintained green spaces in Munich. For example, the Alte Pinakothek that is located in the center of Munich is a captivating destination, offering a journey through the masterpieces of European painting, providing insight into the artistic evolution of the centuries.
Learning about Munich's history was particularly fascinating, especially given the special connection between my Ukrainian hometown, Kyiv, and Munich as sister cities. The mark of friendship between Kyiv and Munich may be observed at the wall of the city-hall on the beautiful Marienplatz.
I am grateful for the opportunity that provided me the “Dr. Dietrich and Dr. Elke Möller Scholarship” by the DAAD-Stiftung support, and the valuable contacts formed during my time in Germany. This experience has not only advanced my research but also opened doors to future academic collaborations.
