In front of the Moi University School of Education building
"I am pursuing a Master of Education in Economics of Education at Moi University School in Kenya. Without the support of the DAAD-Stiftung it would have been totally impossible for me to pursue the master’s studies. I am sincerely very grateful for your time, guidance, and resources you used to support me throughout the scholarship period.”
Without the support of the Sur-Place Garissa Scholarship, Johnson Munyoki would not have been able to complete his master's degree. Alongside his studies, he was not only involved in social organizations, but also founded his own. Now he wants to help less privileged children achieve their goals in life.
Below he gives an insight into his experiences:
My main role as educational economist is to propel the achievement of educational goals, objectives, and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Throughout my studies, I have gained meaningful knowledge and skills in educational planning, funding of education, educational development, demand for and supply of education, efficiency and effectiveness in education, equity and equality in education, policy formulation and implementation in education, quantitative analysis in educational planning, human capital in economics of education, education and economic growth, and research methods in education.
I have also been impacted with knowledge and skills on choosing the right path and alternatives in solving the central problems in education considering how the governments, societies, institutions of education, and households use limited human and material resources available to satisfy the unlimited wants of education.
I have gained meaningful skills, knowledge, expertise, and experiences, which has impacted my perception and attitude positively as an Educational Economist. I have gained more interest on the issue of supply for, demand of education and education, which is mainly affected by equity and equality factors.
Moi University library: a place of knowledge
My project title is “Assessment of the Resources Influencing Implementation of Competency-based curriculum in Primary Schools in Kenya”.
During the scholarship period, I interacted with both local and international students, with whom we shared academic endeavors, social and diverse cultural life. It was an opportunity to interact with intellectuals within and outside my field of specialization, who have guided and mentored me.
I was also able to interact with the university community through participation in their extra-curriculum activities, such as mentorships, motivational speeches, church associations, student’s associations and community services. I have been an active member of MUCSA (Moi University Catholic Students’ Association) and MAKDSA (Machakos Kitui Dioceses Students’ Association). I am the patron of Mwingi Moi University Students’ Association (MWIMUSA). I am also the Founder and Chairperson of Wamusyi Eldoret Self-Help Group.
"Verily, the power of education will never be silenced by the deadliest gun." Johnson Munyoki visting Garissa University
I will apply the skills, knowledge, and expertise I gained throughout my studies to contribute immensely in the line of my duty and in executing institutional responsibilities that enhances good performance, while ensuring my career growth and development.
I will also contribute to my country, the Ministry of Education, institutions of education and society in the best way that I can. I will inspire, guide, and be a role model to many children, students from less privileged background and orphans. I will also support them to achieve their goals and aspirations in life.
The master’s program was a golden opportunity to lay the foundation for my professional studies and career development because it brings me closer to achieving the dream of becoming a PhD holder and a professor. The master’s degree will also have a great impact in my CV and career.
I take this opportunity once more to express my sincere gratitude and thank the DAAD-Stiftung for awarding me the Garissa Master Scholarship Kenya. It was an honor for me to be awarded with the scholarship.
As of October 2023.
